Chikchika (formerly Music Yared) features Haftu Reda and Anbessa Gebrehiwotoriginally from the Tigray region of Ethiopia. They have just released a new session 'Live at Bakehouse Studios, Melbourne', where they are joined by renowned Oromo singer, Mulu Baqqalaa. Singing about love, distance, separation and culture, Chikchika's songs are timeless and entrenched in deep emotion. The new session is glowing with vibrancy from the very start; where bright guitar strums meet agile percussion and the off-kilter drum beat performed by Tawanda Gadzikwa. Accompanied by the traditional instruments of krar (5-string lyre) and masinko (single string violin), the sound is primordial, but with a modern flare. On percussion and bass, Dale Gorfinkel offers a deep and hypnotic groove. Renowned Oromo singer, Mulu Baqqalaa sings with vigour, hitting notes that exist in-between the western scale, with impressive tongue rolls.
